Business need

The primary objective is to increase global awareness of the Gender at Work organization, encouraging participation and collaboration from individuals worldwide through various avenues such as volunteering, donations, advocating their values, and engaging in their projects.

Solution

In my capacity as a designer, my task was to revamp an existing website with a focus on enhancing accessibility and transforming it into a dynamic platform for engagement.

Crucial features to incorporate

Keyboard Navigation

Ensure that all interactive elements, such as buttons and links, can be easily navigated and activated using only the keyboard. This allows users who rely on keyboard navigation or assistive technologies like screen readers to access all content and functionality seamlessly.

Color Contrast

Implement high color contrast between text and background elements to improve readability for users with visual impairments or color blindness. Additionally, choose clear, legible fonts and avoid text that is too small or crowded, ensuring that all users can comfortably read and understand the content.

Alternative Text for Images

Provide descriptive alternative text (alt text) for all images on the website. Alt text serves as a textual alternative to visual content, enabling users with visual impairments to understand the purpose and context of images.

New Pages for Gender at Work Website

I designed new pages for the Gender at Work website, with a focus on UI design for accessibility, involves several key considerations. These include maintaining a clear and consistent layout, implementing responsive design, ensuring accessible forms, addressing color and contrast issues, providing accessible multimedia options, ensuring keyboard accessibility, and making links and buttons distinguishable. By adhering to these principles, the website can offer an inclusive and user-friendly experience for all users, regardless of their abilities or assistive technologies used.

Valuable lessons I learned from redesign this project

  • Through this project, I gained insights into the critical importance of considering diverse user needs and adhering to established accessibility standards, such as WCAG, to ensure the website meets essential accessibility criteria.

  • I also learned the significance of offering alternative formats for content, such as the donation page, to accommodate various users.

  • Moreover, collaborating with an accessibility consultant proved invaluable in enhancing the inclusivity and usability of the website, highlighting the importance of seeking expert guidance in accessibility initiatives.
